Collapsing the Wave
Before you label something, it sits as possibility. The label collapses it into one specific thing. This exercise lets you watch yourself collapse a wave in real time.
The Practice
- 01
Pick any object near you — a cup, a hand, a doorframe.
- 02
Look at it for 30 seconds without naming it.
- 03
Notice the exact moment your mind wants to say the word. That is the collapse.
- 04
Now imagine all the things that object could be to someone who had never seen one: a weapon, a vessel, a sculpture, a sound chamber, a measure.
- 05
Hold those possibilities together without choosing one.
- 06
Release. The object looks slightly different now. That difference is yours.
Every object you encounter is a possibility you keep choosing the same way. You can choose differently.
